The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution demanding that Iran immediately stop attacks on Gulf countries, escalating diplomatic pressure as conflict spreads across the Middle East.
The measure, Resolution 2817, was adopted with 13 votes in favour, while Russia and China abstained. It condemns Iran’s strikes on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, calling them violations of international law and a threat to regional stability.
The resolution also warns Iran against interfering with shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes.
But Tehran rejected the move almost immediately.
Iran’s UN ambassador said the decision was a “serious blow to the credibility” of the Security Council and accused the body of ignoring the role of US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which Tehran says triggered the escalation.
The vote comes as tensions rise across the region, with attacks hitting energy infrastructure, shipping routes, and military targets, raising fears of a wider Middle East conflict.
MOTPOST Opinion: The UN has formally demanded Iran halt its attacks, but Tehran insists the resolution ignores what it calls the “root causes” of the conflict.
